Organizing on behalf of those wrongfully convicted by our criminal injustice system

Justice 4 The Wrongfully Incarcerated

Justice should not end at freedom—it must begin there.

Justice 4 the Wrongfully Incarcerated (J4WI) is a community-rooted organization advancing justice, restoration, and systemic reform for individuals who have been wrongfully imprisoned and their families. Our vision is a world where no person is left to rebuild their life alone after wrongful incarceration—where accountability is real, healing is supported, and restoration is guaranteed.

Our work is not abstract—it is deeply personal.

For our founders and community, this mission is shaped by lived experience, including the story of families impacted by one of the most well-known wrongful conviction cases in history—the Central Park Five case. We understand firsthand the devastation caused by wrongful incarceration—the years lost, the families fractured, and the lifelong impact that does not end at release.

That is why J4WI fights for more than freedom.

We advocate for transformative, statewide legislation that ensures automatic compensation, access to education, and comprehensive reentry support—so that exonerees are not simply released, but fully restored. We work to advance accountability within law enforcement and correctional systems, while building pathways for healing, stability, and long-term opportunity.

Each year, individuals are exonerated after serving years—sometimes decades—for crimes they did not commit. Many return to society with little more than the clothes on their backs, navigating a world that has changed without them, while carrying the weight of trauma, loss, and stigma.

Reentry for the wrongfully incarcerated is not a moment—it is a journey.

At J4WI, we stand in that journey—inside facilities, within communities, and alongside families—ensuring that justice is not defined by release alone, but by the ability to truly rebuild.
